Update on Judge

Judge was surrendered 15 weeks ago with chronic stifle lock which was so bad the poor old fellow couldn’t even walk without locking up. He was in light condition and just in a lot of pain. Judge also was showing signs of stomach ulcers. He was assessed by the vet who said his stifle issues had been left for so long that they were arthritic and not even surgery would help. He also has articulated ringbone in all 4 of his feet, 3 being visible but 1 isn’t quite as advanced. The vet suggested having him put down because he wasn’t paddock sound and was in a lot of pain. We tried a few different things without success and finally I decided to put him on a herbal plan similar to the one we put Sampy on to treat his arthritis. We had nothing to lose. After 6 weeks of a pretty intense herbal treatment plan including ulcer healing herbs Judge is now paddock sound and is hooning around the paddock like never before. I have only seen him lock up once since which was when the farrier was doing his feet but he is now paddock sound and we are hoping that the herbal plan will continue to work and he will stay paddock sound. I am extremely happy with his progress. From crippled and locking up with every step to honing around free and happy just like a horse should. Its just amazing to see.

Bella's Results Were Not Good

Sadly, Bella’s results were not good and her ultra sound results showed many tumors on her lungs. She was put to sleep on Tuesday the 10^th of January 2012 at about 2pm. Bella was a beautiful brave girl who was so loving right until she took her last breath. I just want to thank the Oliver and the team at the Gold Coast Equine Centre for their help, the compassion they showed towards Bella and towards us throughout the whole ordeal. I was with her when she took her last breath and she was loved more than anything.

Rest well my beautiful girl and thank you to everyone who donated money towards her hospital bill. Thank you for myself and the team at SAHA.

Gympie Project

Both horses were bid on only by meat buyers and are both now safe and happy at our new rehabilitation centre in Northern NSW. Pin ups launch calendar to help save ponies

Based in the Gold Coast Hinterland, Save A Horse Australia (SAHA) Horse Rescue & Sanctuary fosters unwanted, neglected, abused and slaughter-bound horses, rehabilitating them and adopting them out under life time adoption contracts.

Established by Amanda Vella, SAHA has rescued and rehabilitated nearly 500 horses and survives on the generosity of the public, equine professionals and the SAHA carers.

To help raise much needed funds to care for these horses, a band of Queensland pin ups and photographers have come together to create Pin Ups for Ponies.

Shot on location at the SAHA horse stud, the calendar features 12 months of pin up cuties, each with one of the amazing horses that are the success stories of SAHA and aims to raise money for feed, rugs, surgery and special needs.

Burlesque bombshell Lila Luxx says, “I am incredibly proud to be a part of the pinup community in Queensland where the only thing bigger than our wardrobes is our hearts! These beautiful animals deserve a second chance and I am so glad that SAHA is there to give it to them.”

Emma Gilland of Friendly Fire Photography says, “These aren't just pretty pictures. Every horse in the calendar has been rescued by SAHA and they are a testament to the selflessness, dedication and kind hearts of all the volunteers from SAHA. Buy a calendar; save a life... it's that simple."

Winner of Miss Pin Up Australia’s Miss Va Va Voom category, Miss Kitten Darling says, “As a pin up model and veterinary nurse, I couldn't wait to be a part of this great project! The photographers, the girls, the beautiful horses and Amanda – it’s such great work and I hope lots of people get involved in such a worthy cause.”

Photographer Samantha Haworth says, “Horses have given me so much over the years, it seemed only fitting that I should try to return the favour through my photography."

Pin up and Kustom Kulture blogger Sheri Bomb says, “I have always been an animal lover and to be able to combine a childhood dream with helping out such a worthy cause is more than a girl could ever want.”

Coming to the SAHA stud in September of 2009, Adonis was severely underweight and had been mistreated. Through months of rehabilitation and patient and loving care, SAHA have turned him into a show quality horse who also features prominently in the Pin Ups for Ponies calendar.

But success stories like Adonis’ are not possible without the care of SAHA and the funding to do so.
By purchasing a calendar, not only will you have 12 months of pretty pin ups to adorn your wall but you will also be helping to save the lives of neglected, abused, abandoned and slaughter-bound horses.

The calendar will be celebrated with an official launch party on Sunday 11 December from 11:30am at the Coomera Lodge. Food, live music, raffles, a presentation from Amanda Vella and appearances by some of the horses and pin ups will highlight the release of the calendar.

Sampy Update

Sampy has had his nerve blocks and it has been established that he is lame in his fetlock / pastern area. It was good to see him trotting around without even a sign of lameness. He will now have xrays to see what’s causing the lameness and to treat accordingly. Will keep you posted on the outcome. His xrays are next week and until then he will remain on his new joint guard and herbal plan which I have just mixed up for him. Hopefully it will help.

I just wanted to take the time to let you know that I’m healthy, happy and have found a loving forever home. I have been adopted to an amazing lady named Shelley who just adores me and I love her so much already. I’m one of the lucky ones but not lucky just by chance. It was by chance that I ended up at the Sanctuary but all of you made the decision to sponsor me helping with my rehabilitation and making sure that I got the best of everything. Bella isn't well

Bella has taken a turn for the worst and we have had the vet out to do more tests including a stomach tap. Her stomach fluid was yellow not clear which isnt good and the vet seems to think she has Peritonitis which is inflammation of the pesitineum. We should have the results back today and until then she is on a high dose of omagurad and antibiotics. Please pray for bella.

We have a new rescue horse

This is Judge, he is a 17hh TB gelding who was surrendered with chronic stifle lock. Judge isn't a happy horse and is kicking out and isn't friendly at all. He is in quite a bit of pain and has been started on joint formula as well as being booked into the chiropractor.

Tyson - Healing hearts

Tyson was surrendered earlier this year due to going blind. He is only 3 years old and had an accident which damaged the optic nerves in both eyes. Many people said he should have been put down but losing his sight hasn't fazed this amazing boy and he is now working with Harmony Hooves Healing Hearts helping disabled and disadvantaged people and has done work with Vision Australia. If you saw how this horse interacts with the people he is helping you would be amazed. He is a real healer, truly one in a million.

We rely on the public and desperately need help

Bad economical times have seen a huge influx of horses requiring help and have also seen a decline in financial support. If we could get just 1000 people to donate just $2 per week this would help more than you know. We are fully registered 100% not for profit and are run solely by volunteers.

Cash flow is something that we need most when rescuing horses. There are always a lot of ongoing expenses including feed, vet, farrier, dentist cost etc. If you are in a position to offer us an ongoing weekly donation please consider setting up a direct debit each week into our account. Once again using only your surname as the reference. Email us your name and address and at the end of the month you will get a month receipt. Our monthly expenses are well into the thousands and if we could get just 1000 people to donate just $2 per week that would help more than anything. Not many people would even miss the $2 per week which would go along way to help our sanctuary rescue these amazing animals. Please help us by being a regular supporter.

Gemmy Update

Gemmy was rescued last month from Gympie when we went on a rescue mission to pick up a Clydie in need. She was pretty poor and coated in lice. Gemmy went down with a nasty chest infection as well which gave as a hendra scare but she is progressing well and has fallen in love with our big TB gelding Rusty. They groom each other all day long. xx

Candy Update

Candy came to us a before winter in poor condition and with a carcinoma on her eye, she has gained weight really well, made it through winter with flying colours and the vet is super pleased with her eye, however her sight is progressively getting worse. She follows little Blondie around everywhere and stresses if she cant see her. Candy will be staying at the Sanctuary until she takes her last breath, she is far to old and in no state to be re-homed. Candy's retirement can be sponsored for only $2 per week which will help with her feed and medical bills. Micky Mouse was rescued from the knackery by a lovely girl and surrendered to us. He has only just arrived and besides knowing he is a pony of about 13hh and aged, i have no information on him. He is very timid and we have him in isolation alone for now. We have named him Micky Mouse. xx

We have a new rescue

This is Bella, she is a 10 year old TB mare who is in poor condition and very weak. Bella's blood test show they she is chronically anemic, has low white blood count and that her liver is really struggling. We have put her on 5 small meals per day, an iron supplement called “Blud”, a herbal blend to help heal her gut, boost her immune system and help her body to heal itself. She is also on antibiotics and will have 2-3 courses to try and kill the infection in her body. After the antibiotics she will go on a course of omaguard as well and she is having vitamin B shots along with rosehip for vitamin C. She isn’t in a very good way at the moment but slowly she is getting better and I have really noticed the difference in just 3 days. Bella is also having an essential oil massage twice per day which she loves.

Jetty's eye surgery

Jetty has had surgery and is home and going well. I have posted photos below of him in the horse hospital and will take some updated ones this weekend of him at home and with his staples out already.

He is coping so well with only one eye and should make a full recovery. Thank you to each and every person who donated money and bought raffle tickets to help with Jets surgery, you are all wonderful and thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Ella has had surgery

Exactly 3 weeks after being surrendered Ella has undergone surgery to remove a SCC from her third eye lid. She is recovering well and should be home soon.

First of all I want to thank Pauline Gaven and the staff at Manly Road Horse Hospital for fitting Jet and Ella in and for taking such good care of them while they have surgery. Whiskey and Chicky both had surgery at Manly Road and they are both going so well.

Jetty went down with an eye ulcer on the 24th of July and after 6 weeks of treatment it just wasn't getting better. Sadly his eye is pretty bad and it cant be saved so this week he will be having surgery to remove his eye. The good news is that for his age, his good eye is really healthy with no cataract so he will cope just fine.

Ella arrived 3 weeks ago tomorrow and it was established during her first vet check that she had a Squamous Cell Carcinoma on her third eye lid. Pauline saw her today and the good news is that she will only lose her third eye lid and not her whole eye.

So it has been a bitter sweet day all in all but at least both horses can be treated and will still live long full lives.

Tess was surrendered a few months ago and she was extremely lame suffering from what looked like chronic arthritis. She was assessed by the vet who confirm advanced Degenerative Joint Disease causing a fully fused fetlock with no flexibility and she was in chronic pain. X-rays showed that she had no blood supply in her hooves at all from laminitis which was left untreated for so long. We did toil with the idea of cortisone shots but she would have needed heart bar shoes to help her laminits which would weigh her hooves down and be more painful with her fetlock. The shots are extremely painful and she would have needed them every 6 weeks and in the end, it wouldnt have completely managed the pain, they would have made it comfortable for her to walk around. She would never be able to run around free like horses should and with the rest of our retired babies. Tess was a 25+ year old horse and in the end we decided that it was best to set her free. There is no way she would have been able to live out her days without pain and I'm not one for keeping a horse alive and in pain. We tried high dose's for joint guard, herbal treatment and Heal With Ease healing plan. She had a magnetic boot on during the day and a float boot on in the stable at night but nothing worked. Her joint Disease didn't happen over night and neither did her clubbed hoof and laminitis.

RIP beautiful Tessy you are now free to gallop the green pastures at Rainbow Bridge.

Rescue Mission Was Successful

On Monday I was called about a Clydie Mare who needed urgent attention. Her owner loved her very much but due to hard economical times he was unable to provide for her. While on the property it was established that there was also a TB mare needing help. Both mares were surrendered to us and made the journey home. The Clydie mare was really weak and she was given electrolyte paste as well as vitamin shots and she is now going really well. Her eye is badly infected and the vet suspects a SCC which will require surgery, but at the moment she isn't strong enough. She will have her eye removed as soon as she is well enough to have surgery. Ella the Clydie is 17 years old and about 17 hands. Gemmy, the TB mare is 23 years old and about 15 hand. Both and lovely mares with amazing natures. Massive thanks to Cindy and Lori for helping with this rescue and massive thanks to Karen Hood from Heavy Horse Heaven Rescue who put us onto the mares. Massive thanks to my vet Andy at Nerang Equine Practice for coming immediately when we called and for taking such good care of our babies. Massive thanks to Yatala Prodcue for bring food down for Ella, for sponsoring her and offering to home her on their property to retire with Harry and Whiskey once she has been rehabilitated.

Chester is looking for a forever home

Chester came to us as a stallion with limited handling, he was gelded and is now broken in and looking for a loving home to start his education. Chester is about 12hh and 3 years old. We are not sure of his breeding but the breaker seems to think he is a brumby. Chester is extremely smart and willing to learn. He was broken in by a natural horseman using soft calm methods and Chester excepted everything calmly. He is still very green and needs someone experienced to educate him but will make a great little kids pony club pony with the right training and in the right hands.

Mishka ~ TB mare that was abandoned on an agistment centre and was surrendered with a lump on her shoulder which was tested as w malignant sarcoma. Mishka is to old for surgery and we are treating her with Sarco-41 and frankincense oil. Mishka’s treatment cost $280 per week in cream and oil with great results: 5 sponsors at $10 per week

Jack ~ TB gelding surrendered with massive grey horse melanoma’s which were tested as benign, he is being treated with frankincense oil to try and reduce the size of the lumps and at $130 for 15ml its quite expensive: 9 Sponsors at $10 per week

There was nothing wrong with this beautiful mare and she was re-homed to a lovely lady who just adores her. Ryley and Caesar were adopted out together to the same home and Ryely is going just as well as caesar (see below post). Ryley is already about 13hh and is going to be a very big horse. He was rescued from going to the knackery with his mum in November 2010. Ryley had a deformed leg and needed urgent surgery to correct it. He is now 100% sound and will make a great riding horse. Ryley couldn't have found a better home.

Candy's vet check went really well. Her eye isn't causing her any pain which is a good thing and she is holding it wide open and blinking fine. The vet seems to think that just leaving it might be the best option at the moment. We are bathing it with chamomile tea 4 times a day and its looking so much better already. She is an aged pony so surgery might not be the best option at this time. We will monitor her and cross each bridge as it comes. Candy has picked up so much in the 2 weeks she has been in care.

Tessy is doing so well since her vet check. Her eye is no longer watering so the tear duct flush worked wonders. Since she started on her joint guard and has had her magnetic pastern boot on, she has been hooning around the paddock like a 10 year old. I'm so happy with how she is progressing. Her coat is nice and soft and shiny now as well and she is very happy with her best paddock friend Louie. She will be ready for a retirement home in no time.

Our beautiful Krystal who has been retired with us since she arrived in September 2009 went down with a mystery illness on Friday the 1st of July. She was showing signs of discomfort, distress and was scouring pretty badly. We had the vet to her and she was placed on antibiotics to kill an infection which was in her gut. Her gut was very overactive and the antibiotic worked well, however after 5 days of treatment Krystal went down and she couldn't get up. The vet was called immediately and it turns out she had a reaction to the drug. Its now 1 and a half weeks later and princess Krystal has normal poo and is doing really well. Massive thanks to Andy from Nerang Equine Practice for her amazing help.

Krystal is a 28 year old stock horse mare who has taught two little girls how to ride since she has been with us. She is an amazing, sweet mare with so much love to give. Krystal took a while to pick up in rehabilitation and after a nasty case of impaction colic we decided to retire her with us forever. She will take her last breath in our care and she is loved by so many of our supporters and volunteers.

Tess saw the vet yesterday and she has chronic arthritis in her fetlock as well as a blocked tear duct. The vet flushed her tear duct and we have started her on joint guard, apple cider vinegar and we just bought her a magnetic fetlock boot. Tess is about 25 years old and has good lungs and a strong heart beat which is awesome. We will monitor her arthritis and will keep everyone posted on her rehabilitation.

Candy is picking up well in care and has twice the amount of energy as when she did when she arrived. She runs around and plays with Blondie now which is awesome. We have been bathing Candy's eye with chamomile tea 4 times a day and have seen a slight improvement. We had the vet booked in to see her on Sunday when he was assessing Krystal who is sick at the moment but our vet was called to a suspected hendra and didn't have time to assess Candy so we have booked him in for this week. She is an amazing little pony with a beautiful personality and we all love her to bits.

Jetty is doing really well finally and is out of the critical stages. He has so much energy, has put on quite a bit of weight and is just looking and feeling really good. The farrier said he wasn't quite ready to have his heart bar shoes off yet and the vet was extremely pleased with the way his cheek tooth abscess was healing. I'm so happy he is such a fighter.

Mishka was diagnosed with a malignant sarcoma on her shoulder and due to her age surgery isn't an option. I have healed sarcoids many times with natural products and decided that we would try healing her with a special natural cancema cream from America and Frankincense oil. We have had great success and Mishka's tumor has gone from 13 x 10 cm's to 9 x 9 cm's in only 14 days. We will continue to treat her and hopefully we will kill this tumor completely. New Rescue Horse

Marley Update

Marley's second horse hospital appointment went really well and he is due back for his third appointment on the 26th of September. He has however gotten another hoof abscess, which saw a huge part of his sole cut away. Marley is stabled and bandaged up for now and will remain bandaged for at least 2 weeks. He is doing really well and I'm happy with his progress which is slow and steady.

Marley was surrendered in November 2010 with two fractured pedal bones, chronic laminits and white line disease. He was in a bad way but slowly he is getting better.

Mishka is looking for sponsorship

Beautiful Mishka was surrendered only about 5 weeks ago when she had been abandoned in a paddock at an agistment centre. When she arrived she had a massive lump on her shoulder which I thought was a sarcoid but wanted to have a biopsy done before I started treating it. The biopsy came back that it wasn't a sarciod but was a malignant sarcoma.

Mishky is 24 years old and much to old for surgery so we have been treating her with Frankincense oil and sarco-41 with great success. I'm very happy with the progress however Mishky's treatment is quite expensive and we also have another horse having the same treatment done.

Frankincense oil is $130 for a 15ml bottle and we are using 1 per week. The Sarco-41 is $120 for the tubes which we are also using 1 per week.

Bandit is looking for a forever home

Bandit's registered name is "Riverstone" and is 15.2hh and 9 years old. He is a stunning horse and would make a perfect Hack, Dressage or pleasure mount. Bandit has a calcified ligament in his pelvis which doesn't stop him for being ridden and he is sound he just isn't suitable for PC, Jumping or sporting unless his muscles are built up and he is in fit working condition.

He is a sweet boy who just loves affection and is top of the peaking order and will stand up to any horse that tries to put it over him. When he hasn't been worked in a while he can be quite fresh and I always lunge him before riding if he hasn't been ridden in a while. His first time under saddle went really well and he didn't buck, rare or even pigroot. He has been worked and ridden quite a bit since then. In saying that he is also very OTT and hasn't learnt anything other than race so he would best suit someone who is experienced enough to teach him a few things.

He is stunning with no blemishes and would make a great little hack! Bandit is easy to float, shoe, wash, groom, ride, handle and is just a pleasure to own. He has never bitten or kicked and other than being bossy at feed time he has no bad vices.

Midi is looking for a forever home

Beautiful Midi is still looking for a loving new home. She is 15hh, about 16 years old and she is a grey Anglo Arab. Midi is an absolute gem to do anything with, she loves attention and groom time and gets jealous if you pay too much attention to the other horses. She is dying for the chance to bond with someone special. Midi does suffer for a little itch on her shoulder and neck so she will need to be rugged but its def not server and is maintained with medicated shampoo and rugging. She also has some floating issues which we have been working her through. She will load ok but once you go to get the tailgate up she freaks and backs out a million miles an hour, on the other hand though sometimes she stands in their perfectly. Midi can be aggressive to other horses but only ever at feed time, in saying that she isn’t top of the peaking order but will hold her own pretty well in a herd. Under saddle she is fresh and will jig jog for a while before settling down. She does toss her head a little at the beginning but this also settles in time and she is perfect for pleasure riding, trail riding and just a lovely fun horse for someone to love and work with.

Midi has had her teeth done, she has been on a 6 weekly worming program and has been vaccinated. She is a good doer and an easy horse to love and care for. Midi is rugged in a cotton during the day and a 180g turnout rug at night. She was just in a rainsheet for a while but just last week we started rugging her in something a little thicker. Whiskey Has His Eye Removed

Whiskey has had surgery to remove his eye and is going really well. He will have one more round of Chemotherapy and should be home in 3 weeks to retire. Whiskey will be going on a full detox and treated with some natural cancer killing supplements as well. He will be treated with aromatherapy oils, aloe vera juice, apricot kernels and herbs to help heal his body and prevent the cancer from coming back, he will also be on a healing plan from “heal with ease”.

We are looking forward to having Whiskey home soon and a massive thank you to the amazing vets and nurses at Manly Road Horse Hospital for doing everything they can to help Whiskey, especially his eye specialist Pauline Gaven.

Mishka and Jacks Vet Update

Last week we had the vet come out to take a biopsy of Jack’s lumps and Mishka’s lump which I thought was a sarciod. The results were a bit of a shock actually and wasn’t at all what we expected.
Jack has grey horse melanoma’s which are benign but two of them are far too large to remove. They will continue to grow until they start effecting vital organs in which case he will then need to be euthanized.
Mishka’s lump isn’t a sarcoid and is actually a sarcoma which is malignant. She is a 24 year old horse and surgery isn’t an option.

With both Mishka and Jack we have decided to treat both of their lumps with natural products that have been proven to kill cancer and reduce the size of benign and malignant tumors. Both horses will go on a full detox and will be treated with Frankincense oil, aloe vera juice, apricot kernels, cancema cream as well as a healing plan from “heal with ease”.

I will be taking progress photos of each horses tumors and will be keeping a diary which I will publish on this website once we have some results.

We have nothing to lose and everything to gain with this exercise and fingers crossed we can do something to help both horses live out there days happy and healthy.

Whiskey went back to Manly Rd Horse Hospital today for more surgery. I will keep you all posted on how he goes. Oxenford Pony Club Oldies Day

On the 22nd of May the we all went to the Oxenford Pony Club Oldies day. Abbey's first Pony Club Day, Clyde and Bobbie were there. Adonis was going to come but hurt his shoulder the day before.

It was a great day all round, Cindy got third over all in intermediate with Junior, Joanne got third over all in beginners with Bobbie, Carol won ribbons on Abbey and Pete won ribbons on Clyde. I love seeing our rescue horses doing so well in the show ring and at pony club.

New Rescue Horse

Jack was surrendered due to some lumps on his body. We are not sure what they are yet and the vet is booked into do biopsy's on Wednesday. He will have his teeth done on the same day. His name is "Tupi Family" or Jack for short :-) 12 year old TB gelding about 16hh.

Tyson Update

Tyson is a 3 year old pure bred QH gelding who has gone blind in both eyes. We had the very awesome eye specialist assess him and sadly his blindness is from optic nerve damage which she thinks was caused by an injury when he was a foal. She said the most common cause is rearing up and falling over backwards banging the head and tearing the optic nerve. This is irreversible and he will always be blind. She did advise us to have him put to sleep. The good news is that Tyson can see slightly out of one eye (shadows and movements). We have contacted the blind horse association which is an amazing association, please have a look at their website. Its very inspirational.

We have found Tyson a suitable home. The wonderful Jodie Alderton impairments. Jodie has a number of rescue horses with disabilities where the children who she works with can relate to each horse. If and when Tyson goes completely blind and becomes a danger to himself and others we will assist Jodie in having Tyson put to sleep. Currently, we have both decided that he isn't ready to go to horsey heaven yet and I will keep you all up to date with how he is going. Tyson will be floated to Jodie's healing centre on Saturday which is less than 5 minutes drive from our Gilston Rehabilitation Centre.

Update on Freya

Freya's Story written just after she was rescued:
I first saw Freya at the Gympie Sales on the 20th of Feb 2010. I went there to take photo's for my "say no to the slaughter of horses" facebook group page and was not going to buy a horse due to having enough rescues, however, i fell in love with her and her baby foal. Trying to be strong i left without buying her but on the journey home and for days after i was regretting leaving her there. I was informed that she was purchased by Rathdowney knackery so i called them and offered to buy her. They wanted $400 for her but her foal has already been killed. A few people donated money to save Freya and on the 28th of Feb 2010 at 11am i drove to Rathdowney to pick her up. It was a very long day and she was tired, scared and weak. She wouldn't load onto the float and the two men helping me actually lifted her rear legs and bum and carried her onto the float. She travelled well was very skinny and very weak but an amazing, loving horse that has a very forgiving heart. Even when she was scared as hell, she didn't even try to kick nor did she show any nasty side, just an amazing natured horse... I named her freya after the goddess of love and beauty.

Thank you to Melissa who helped me save her from the knackery on kill day, its something not to many people can do and thank you to everyone who donated money. Freya is alive today because of your kindness...

Update on Freya's Foal who we thought was dead: (posted in March on this web page)
As many of you would remember back on the 20th of Feb 2010 I went to the Gympie sales and fell in love with a beautiful Grey mare and her foal. I wasn't able to stay for the auction due to having a sick horse at home but this mare really played on my mind and i couldn't stop thinking about her. The next day I searched every knackery and dogger trying to find out who bought her and I found her at Rathdowney knackery. She was bought for $90 and was completely unhandled. The knackery owner told me that her little foal had been injured and needed to be killed but she was $400 to rescue.

Myself and the lovely Melissa made the journey out to Rathdowney to rescue her and 7 months later she was re-homed. During her rehabilitation a lovely lady called "Mandy" actually contacted me and told me that she bought the little foal off Rathdowney at the Gympie sales and that he had indeed been rescued, he was about 2 months old.

Well this is an update on how the little foal is doing. Mandy named him Seal and he is now a yearling but he was re-homed to another lovely lady who has re-named him Milo. He was bay, went black and is now greying out. He is happy and very healthy and going so well.

FREYA UPDATE: Its been 8 months since Freya was re-homed and 14 months since she was rescued. She is doing so well and is so very loved by her new mummy. I'm more than happy with Freya's home, she couldn't have found a better home. Massive thank you to everyone involved in her rescue and to her new mummy who loves her so much and gives her everything she needs and wants. Freya is an amazing horse and deserves the perfect home she got. xxxx

New Rescue Horses

Tyson is 3 year old QH gelding 14hh who was surrendered with some vision problems. The vet seems to think he is totally blind and that it may be genetic which is very sad considering his young age. We have decided to take him to an eye specialist to see whether she can shed some light on his situation and I have been in contact with the blind horse association. I will keep you all posted.

We had a lovely lady go over to pick Tyson up and when she did the owner of the Agistment centre asked if we could take an old mare who had been abandoned there. She is 24 years old, 16hh who is in light condition with the worst hooves I have seen in a while. She also has a very large nasty sarcoid on her shoulder. The poor old girl is a real sweetheart though and hopefully we can find her a nice retirement home.

Abbey was rescued in December 2010 when she was left in a massive paddock to starve but a lovely lady called us to come and pick her up, so we did. She was extremely poor and due to her being an aged mare we didn't know whether she would make it, but she did and we haven't looked back. Abbey is one of the most amazing horses we have had in our care. She is dead quite and personality plus and is currently the Queen of SAHA. She is going so well and has found an amazing home. We will update you all with her progress and hopefully we will see her gracing the PC oldies days very soon.

Jet was surrendered on the 30th of Jan 2011 in very poor condition with a few issues. Jet had a large sarciod on his leg and he is suffering from impaired vision in one eye. He is being treated for laminitis and will be off to see Robert Humphries the equine Chiropractor very soon. Jetty Jet is such a good boy and I'm happy with his progress even though it is very slow.

Chyanne is a flood victim that we currently have in care. Her owner was caught up in the floods and sadly so was this beautiful old mare. Chyanne was almost washed away and her owner had to swim her to safety but Chyanne got caught up in a fence cutting her back legs pretty badly. She lost so much weight due to the stress and because her owner lost all of there feed and couldn't get out of their property to buy some more. Chyanne has been in care for about 6 weeks now and her owner has moved into a new home and we are hoping that she can go home to her mum in about 4 weeks time. Chyanne who we have nic named "Donks" is a beautiful old girl, 14hh and between 30 and 35 years old.

Marley was surrendered on the 10th of December with the worst hooves I have ever seen. He was so lame that he couldn't walk and on having his xrays done we discovered that he had chronic laminitis and two fractured pedal bones. The vet said we should consider having him put to sleep but there was some blood supply to the hooves and we wanted to at least give him one last chance. We contacted an amazing corrective farrier and we haven't looked back. Marley is almost better, his hooves are almost grown out, his abscess outbreaks are few and far between and his laminitis all but gone. We have him on biotin supplements (retread) and founder guard to be safe but he is going extremely well.

Whiskey was surrendered on the 12th of May 2010. He was abused and then rescued by an amazing lady who surrendered him to SAHA. We have since found out that poor whiskey had an aggressive carcinoma in his eye and has been treated by the lovely crew and amazing eye specialist at Manly Rd Horse Hospital. Whiskey has had two lots of surgery and three rounds of chemo so far and has been sent home for a break before he goes back in for surgery again. We will keep you posted on how he is going. June was rescued in June 2010 when she was being sent to slaughter after being used as a broodmare. We got June into perfect health and adopted her out. It was time for her 3 monthly check when We got a phone call saying that the current owners couldn't look after her anymore and wanted to bring her home. She was in shocking condition which broke our hearts. I couldn't believe my eye's when I saw her and broke down crying tears of anger and disappointment. We have since tightened up our application process and will be appointing field officers to monitor our adopted horses more closely. She is currently in care and going really well.

Sampy was rescued from the dogger sales in September 2010. He was bought by Rathdowney Knackery and we later bought him off them for a little more than they paid. He was slightly lame which we thought was from a crack in his hoof which went all the way up to the Coronet band but after much treatment and fixing the crack we have discovered the lameness isn't from his hoof at all. We are still trying to find the source of his slight lameness and will keep you all posted. Sampy is a 18 year old SH gelding about 15hh.

Chester was a surrender only last week. He is about 11.2hh and rising 3 colt but we just gelded him. He is healing nicely and is learning to lunge. Chester is an amazing, smart little pony who is just so willing to please. With time and handling he will make a great little horse for someone to love and train. Chester will stay with us to heal and then will be looking for an amazing forever home.

Ryley was surrendered with his mum Mary (who has been re-homed) when they were going to be sent to the dogger due to him having a bent leg. Sadly, Ryley was the second foal that Mary threw with this kind of problem so they put it down to her bad genes. We had surgery on Ryley's leg and he is now going strong. Ryley has also found an amazing home and we will be finalizing his contract this week. What a very happy beginning for this little boy.

Midi was surrendered in good health to find a loving new home. She had been rescued but her owner could no longer keep her. She has been looking for a new home but needs someone very special who loves to go fast and hoon around. She is Anglo Arab and even though she doesn't look it, she has lots of Arab in her. She has been used for trail riding and has a few floating issues that needs to be worked through. Midi is 15hh, about 16 years old and just beautiful.

Bandit is a beautiful 15hh, 8 year old TB gelding that was surrendered in bad condition on the 28th of December 2010. He has a pretty bad calcified ligament in his back which is caused from his pelvis being out for a very long time. He is only suitable for pleasure riding and he is currently on trial with a very lovely family. Fingers crossed it all works out for him.

Max was surrendered by his owner because he has sarcoids on his nose and she didn't have the money to be able to help him. When we got him home he had all kinds of behaviour issues and we sent him away for training. Max's training is over and he is coming home very soon. Max is a 4 year old first cross QH (TB) Gelding and is 15.3hh. We are hoping to get him home this week.

Rusty was surrendered on the 28th of Feb 2011 in light condition. He had been rescued and the lady who rescued him surrendered him due to having to many horses. Rusty had gone down with colic while they had him and the vet said he was prone to sand colic. We have been very slow with him and he was showing signs of aggression while handling and rugging so I loaded him onto the float and took him out to see Robert Humphries the chiropractor. Robert said that he was out everywhere and that he was an amazing natured horse to be putting up with such pain for so long. His pelvis was so badly rotated that it was pinching a sciatic nerve causing extreme pain. Robert worked his magic and Rusty was a different horse immediately. On the way to the chiropractor he was almost going down in the float, kicking and scrabbling but on the way home he was soft and hardly moved. It was amazing. Rusty will now rest until the 16th of June which is his next appointment. Rusty is a 17hh, 14 year old TB and just amazing.

Krystal was rescued from the dogger pens in September 2009. She is a 28 year old stock horse mare and has retired with SAHA. She is currently living her days out with a beautiful family who's daughter was having riding lessons on her and who fell in love. The little girls name is Ryley and she loves our beautiful old girl dearly. Krystal and Ryley (the little girl) have an unbreakable bond and I'm pretty sure Krystal will spend the rest of her days by Ryley's side. They both deserve the love they offer each other, its simply amazing.

We are launching a raffle to raise money for Chester’s gelding and also to pay for the transport to get a STB gelding (from the same property that Keno and Babe came from) from Mirriam Vale QLD to our Gilston rehabilitation centre ($355 with Rudd’s transport). The STB is in urgent need of care and is currently losing weight. We will be drawing the raffle on the 25th of May 2011.

Field Officers

Due to the large number of horses under adoption contracts we are seeking to appoint a number of “volunteer” field officers to conduct checks on our rescue babies. Depending on your area and how much time you have available will depend on how many horses we will appoint to you.

We currently check on our horses every 3 months, more frequent if we think it is necessary. You will be given training in our organisations “code of conduct” and the Privacy Act and you must conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.

If you think you have the time and dedication to become a volunteer field officer please email saveahorseaustralia@yahoo.com.au and I will get back to you within the next 2 weeks. We will be conducting training sessions in 2 weeks. You may only be required a few days each month and is a great way to get involved.

Each person must be experienced with horses.

We are looking for people to cover areas from Northern NSW, Gold Coast, South Brisbane, East Brisbane, West Brisbane including Beaudesert, North Brisbane and as far up as Gin Gin.

We have a new rescue pony

We have a little 11hh 3 year old unhandled pony stallion but after a few hours of handling we had his feet trimmed, bathed and rugged. He is a sweet little boy who is understand, trusting and has so much love to give. He is suffering from a little itch and will be gelded tomorrow. We still dont have a name for the little fellow yet.

Jet was surrendered on the 30th of Jan 2011 in poor condition. He has been putting on weight well and we have been treating him for a sarcoid on his hind leg. He is also being treated by Robert Humphries chiropractor due to stumbling. Jet is a quite gentle old soul who would kill for a treat and loves being groomed and cuddled. We are hoping that he will be ready in about 6-8 weeks for a new home and are searching for 5 short term sponsors for Jetty jet.

Marley was surrendered on the 10th of December 2010 with the nastiest cracked hooves I have ever seen. His xrays showed chronic laminitis and two fractured petal bones. Marley was in a lot of pain and many people thought we should put him to sleep. He is on founder guard and retread supplements which cost $80 and $110 per kilo bucket. He also requires expensive corrective shoeing and we have spent thousands already trying to get him back to health. Marley still has a long way to go and will be with us for at least another 12 – 18 months. We are looking for long-term sponsors who can help him through his rehab. However, if you commit to sponsorship and something happens down the track and you can no longer sponsor him, just email us and we will find another sponsor. Marley is 12 years old and a 17hh TB gelding.
