New Rescue Mare

This mare went through the Woodford sales last weekend and I have bought her from Rathdowney knackery. She is only young with a growth on her eye the poor girl. She is arriving tomorrow and will be assessed by my vet but I’m pretty sure she will need surgery. I will keep everyone posted on her progress. I have been informed by her old owner that she was also running with a stallion and there is a possibility that she is in foal.

Lake Gregory Brumby's

The Minister of Indigenous Affairs, Kim Hames has approved the mass round up of the Lake Gregory Brumbies, allegedly having them transported to Queensland to be killed for human consumption. I have been informed that even though he has stated that he is going to the Mulan Community to assess the situation, he has already arranged the helicopter and transporter for the job, which is meant to be taking place in Jan/Feb 2011.

The minister said that he needs to clean up the wild horse issue which he quoted as being bigger than “Ben Hur” he was also alleged to have quoted his opinion of Shirley Brown and Steven Yuman who are the Elders on the pastoral lease around Lake Gregory saying “They can’t handle it" and "no good to leave it up to them buggers.” This is lovely coming from the Minister of Indigenous affairs who was appointed in the interests of the Indigenous Western Australia.
We are currently fighting this in Parliament and we have much more information but I cannot post until we have information in writing.
Please support this campaign and voice your opinion to Kim Hames, it only takes a few minutes to send an email. Please keep them professional and to the point. Mass culling and transporting these horses across Australia for slaughter is inhumane and unjust, especially when there are people in Western Australia willing to teach Indigenous people how to train these amazing animals. This approval isn’t the answer.

It's been 1 year since we lost Sandy ~ Always remembered ♥

Sandy was a stock horse mare who came to me in very poor condition. Sadly she had a tumor in her nose that grew so very fast. She was with me for 5 days before being put to sleep. 5 days wasn't even enough time for her to settle in but in that 5 days I discovered a sweet mare, so loving and trusting. I will always remember Sandy, she will live in my heart until my last breath.


By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
when their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
is a place where beloved creatures find rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
til The Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
for here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed.
Their bodies have healed with strength imbued.

They trot through the grass without even a care,
til one day they whinny and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes sharp and alert.
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the herd.

As they see each other...one person...one horse.

STOP the Sale of Horse Meat for Human Consumption in W.A & Australia

Finally we have our petition ready for download. Please print it off, have it signed by as many people as you can and have it posted back to the address at the bottom of the petition. This isn’t just a Western Australia issue anymore. Vince Garreffa of Mondi Di Carne gourmet butchers in Inglewood Perth was granted a license to sell horse meat by state Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman, however, Garreffa’s license allows him to sell this meat to anyone in Australia and horse has been served in restaurants and sold to meat suppliers Australia wide.

Our aim is for 10,000 signatures and once collated we plan to hold a rally to present to a W.A Labor Politician to formally present this to the W.A Legislative assembly. We will be asking them to review and revoke the license immediately based on the complete absence of any Australian Industry Standards for the welfare, slaughter and sale of Horse Meat for human consumption.

We oppose the sale of horse meat due to the lack of due process in the granting of this license, no considerations were made to ensure the welfare and health of these horses and the process of slaughter and supplying horse meat for human consumption. Minister Redman and Mr Gareffa also refuse to provide details of the horses selected and supplied for slaughter, which provides the public with no assurance that the meat is fit or SAFE for human consumption.

We also oppose the sale of Horse Meat based on the cultural beliefs and traditions within Australia, where we do not consume our companion animals.

Say NO to the sale of horse meat for human consumption in Australia Campaign update

Currently we are organising another demonstration in Perth and will release details once they have been confirmed. Back in July we started up an online petition which has close to 5000 signatures, however these online petitions are not reputable or considered by the government when trying to amend laws or legislation so we are currently in the process of creating a petition that can be printed out, signed and sent back to us. If you are able to print off this petition, take it to your place of work, pony clubs or other areas to have it signed and then sent back to us to present to the government please email me urgently.

As most of you already know, we will not give up this fight until the green light to sell horse meat for human consumption is over turned. There are too many inconsistencies within the Western Australian Government in regards to how quickly this was passed and approved and there are too many inconsistencies with how and where these horses are being slaughtered, the process involved and whether or not it’s being monitored by the DPI and the process humane.

The horse slaughter industry in Australia is very quiet and relatively unregulated. The RSPCA have a policy in regards to humane killing which states “An animal must be either killed instantly or instantaneously rendered insensible to pain until death supervenes” however, we have a USA study that was conducted which proves that the captive bolt is an inhumane process for killing horses due to the structure of their skull. The captive bolt does not kill instantly or instantaneously and cause the horse extreme pain before death. I have been informed by the Western Australia Government that they will not take into consideration the USA study because it was not conducted on Australian soil even though the process is exactly the same. The RSPCA have another policy which states “Handling of animals prior to killing must also be humane and as stress-free as possible” however, these animals are subject to sometimes long interstate transporting to one of the two licensed abattoirs in Australia who kill horses for human consumption without rest, food or water, not to mention the state of the horses in sale yards, the transportation issues and treatment in knackery’s of horses killed for pet food (but this is a different issue). In Western Australia there is no licensed abattoir for slaughtering horses for human consumption and no details have been confirmed on where these animals are being killed, however I have been informed that they are being killed in a knackery licensed to slaughter for pet food but I have been unable to confirm this.

At present we are not trying to have horse slaughter banned completely, there are many more issues that need to be addressed before that could ever happen, such as over breeding etc. We are trying to clean up an unregulated industry that has no concern for the welfare of these animals, and in most cases violates the Animal Welfare Act (or its equivalent), but our first step is to have this green light to sell horse meat for human consumption in Australia over turned. We need to be the voice for the horses that have no voice.

Foster Carer's

I have decided that having foster homes for some of our healthier rescue horses hasn’t worked as well as I would have liked and from now on I will no longer be using them. When new horses arrive they will stay at one of our two specific rehabilitation centres based either in Gilston or Allanview QLD. Which rehabilitation centre will depend on what care the horse needs at the time of rescue. Both centres have full care facilities, on call veterinarians and volunteers dedicating their time to caring for all horses around the clock. 

I currently have 9 horses at the Gilston rehabilitation centre and 3 horses at Allanview, along with 2 rescues who have retired at S.A.H.A.

There have been many people who have donated time, money or items to us at S.A.H.A and sometimes we get so busy that it’s hard to call or email everyone individually. I am extremely grateful to each and every person who has helped in one way or another. Please understand that we are extremely busy and just because I haven’t called or emailed you personally that I do not appreciate everything you have done or the items you have sent.

Lately I have had some amazing things donated, rugs, horse gear, donations towards my vet bill ~ and for all of the people that have helped with time to transport horses, cut chaff, make phone calls etc you are all amazing. I don’t know what I would do without your help.
There is no way that I could rescue as many horses as I do without the ongoing love and support from you all and I hope I haven’t offended people by not emailing or calling. I do thank everyone after each horse update and I personally thought that people would read it and know that it was directed at everyone who has helped.
I am ever grateful for your love and support..

Quick Horsey Update  ♥

SAMPSON ~ Is a real character, he HATES getting his hooves muddy... What a laugh!! Sampy's stable opens into his paddock but right at the door it gets a little muddy from the rain and Sampson refuses to walk in the mud or jump over it. His stable door is left open so that he can eat breakfast then go out into the paddock after, but two days of not leaving his stable even when the door was open we figured out why... He refused to walk through the mud.. haha.... All the pulling and pushing didn't help, he just planted!! Even a yummy bucket of feed didn't help.. haha... Princess Sampy boy!!

HOPE ~ Has her nose out of joint because she no longer gets stabled. She is healthy enough not to need it and has the big paddock with Ma all day and night. She did enjoy her little sleeps laying down but she can't get spoilt to much. She already gets away with murder and she knows it.. I don't own this filly, she owns me! ♥

MA ~ Is doing so well, god she is a beautful old soul. I just can't believe someone neglected her so badly.. She has a pure heart made of solid gold.. She is the only horse who can pull the naughty little filly Hope into line..

SULLEY ~ Is a real darling, he has a soft amazing soul as well and will give his all to anyone. He is a little funny with strangers but once he trusts you, he will do anything to please. He loves being groomed and enjoys a rump massage the most.. He likes his neck massaged as well, but mostly his rump... He is a massive puppy dog!

ZENA ~ Has so much energy now.. She is first waiting at the gate for carrots and even galloped around the paddock after being in the stable for the first few days of arriving. Now she neighs all the time to anyone who will pay her attention. Her windsucking sores from the collar have healed up nicely and she has already put some weight on. She has a sweet soul as well and at 13 years old will make an awesome riding horse for someone deserving..

BAMBI ~ Her toe abcsess has healed completely and she is paddocked with Zena. She is an amazing mare as well and at 14 will also make a great riding horse for someone experienced.. She is putting on weight well and her rain scald is healing up nicely...

BENITA ~ has also put on weight well and loves being bossed around by June and Zoria.

ZORIA ~ Is being adopted by Karen. Karen fostered Zoria and fell in love. She rode her and after getting past her naughty ways, she is now riding her bareback down to the neighbours place. Karen has spoilt her rotten and she gets toast for breakfast :-) I'm thinking she may need a diet though, she is getting very round.

JUNE ~ Is still looking for a retirement home. I haven't re-advertised her yet but she is ready to go..

WHISKEY ~ Is having his medication for his eye problem but still no idea if it's going to help.. Fingers crossed it's not cancer.

KRYSTAL ~ Is doing well, she is a dear old soul and Ryley is just spoiling her but she deserves it.. Krystal retired with me and is 27 years old, but Ryley fell in love with her when she was having some lessons, so I let her take Krystal home and she couldn't have found a better place to spend her days... ♥

Naughty Ponies ~ Both got out again and led each other on a naughty rampage.. For some reason silly Helix always goes to Hope.. But he couldn't get into her paddock and kept getting zapped by the electric fence.. Funny enough he kept trying but Garth being the smart one, stood back and watched.. He didn't try once and after watching Helix, Garth took himself back to his paddock... haha Silly ponies! I still can't keep a fly mask on Garth though, Helix pulls them all off him.. They are the hardest to keep in paddocks, but the electric tape used to cover the gap in the fence should do the trick.. ♥

Rescue Horse Urgently Seeking Home ~ Brisbane QLD

We get so many calls about rescue horses in need and sadly when we have a full house we can't take them all. This mare is urgently seeking a home, she was rescued and her owner can't give her the care she needs. Please call the number below if you can take this beautiful horse.

Thoroughbred, Sweet and loving nature. Does kick (but not at a person) has owned her for 2 months. Bad with picking up feet. Previous owner bred her, basically just left her in the paddock. Went to another family for 1 year during that time. Can be in the paddock with horses. Taken her on trail rides and done some lunge work ( not very good). Does pigroot sometimes. Chirstmas BBQ ♥

The wonderful team at Yatala Produce are having their Christmas Party/BBQ on the 5th of December at the shop address (6/20 Old Pacific Highway Yatala, QLD).

It is BYO drinks and chairs but some drinks will be provided for the kiddies. There will be a raffle on the day and proceeds will be given to us at S.A.H.A. which is just wonderful.... So please stop by and enjoy a drink with some great people. I hope to see you there..
